neurolinguistic programmingWhat is Neuro-Linguistic Programming(abbreviated - NLP)? Lately, everyone has been talking about it as an excellent tool that can significantly improve the quality of your life. Is it true or fiction? And what is this NLP for? We will try to give you answers to these questions. The term NLP was first introduced into circulation by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. They studied the most effective types of psychotherapy and came to the conclusion that they have a similar structure. Having revealed this essence and tried to describe it abstractly, they created the concept of NLP.

Basic principles of NLP

Neuro-linguistic programming -is a direction in practical psychology based on individual human experience: how we organize information received from the senses, how we describe it in language, and how we act to achieve our goal. NLP is not the ultimate truth, rather it is a model that you can try to use and get some results. There are a number of ideas on which the concept of neurolinguistic programming is based:

  • The absence of a unified objective reality for all. Each of us perceives reality in his own way, based on his own attitudes, life experience and other characteristics. Therefore, in NLP it is considered effective to work with this subjective perception.
  • The principle of unity of speech, consciousness and activity. They represent a system, the elements of which influence each other. Our picture of the world determines our personality, perception, behavior, speech (and vice versa). Accordingly, through competently constructed actions and speech, we can influence a person and correct his inner world - picture of the world, perception and attitudes. The main conclusion from this principle: any behavior can be understood, described and changed (even the most dangerous and negative).
  • Human behavior is always based onsome kind of positive intent. When a person decides to do something, he in his head chooses the best, from his point of view, option, and embodies it in life. Due to some of its features, he may not see other more winning options. Supporters of NLP believe that a person can be helped to change his negative behavior by expanding the range of accessible and attractive behaviors.
  • Effective communication requires good communicationcontact between people ("rapport"). It is characterized by ease of communication, a sense of trust and self-disclosure, and satisfaction from communication. For example, for successful psychotherapy, first of all, it is necessary to establish contact between the client and the psychotherapist. The principle of "mirroring" can be effective in establishing contact - the psychotherapist adapts to the client, choosing similar intonations, breathing rhythm, posture, gestures, facial expressions, and other external manifestations of himself.
  • Correct perception of failure. You, like any other person, are probably upset by your failures? But the supporters of NLP are happy with it! The thing is that any result is perceived by them as a feedback, including failure. It's like a signal telling us what needs to be corrected to achieve the result.
  • The choice is always there. Effective use of NLP is associated with the ability to re-qualify the situation of the impasse in the situation of choice. For this, a person should be able to realize where this choice is and what alternatives he has. Due to the ability to choose and act, a person can remain flexible, and this is the key to a quality and happy life.
  • The effectiveness of communication is determined by the reactioninterlocutor. The most important thing is not the information you convey, but how the interlocutor has learned it and how he reacted to it. You can talk about the meaning of life, but if the person does not understand you, then there is no point in it.
  • The idea of the existence of representative systems. In fact, this is through what channels a person receives information from the outside world. You all probably heard about three types of people: visuals (perceiving the world, mainly through sight), audials (through hearing) and kinesthetics (through touch, taste and smell). To define your representative system is simple: try to compose a short story about something important for you and count how often you use words related to vision, hearing or kinesthetics. The largest number of them and will relate to the dominant you have a representative system. Such knowledge can be useful, for example, when you prepare for exams.

    Applications of NLP

And why is it needed, this neurolinguisticprogramming? The question is very important, because there is a stereotype that NLP is something used to manipulate people and, therefore, it is something bad. Indeed, NLP is actively used as a tool for unconscious influence on people in sales, management and personal relationships, and this can be unpleasant for these people. However, like any other phenomenon, it has positive sides. NLP is able to improve people's lives when used in psychotherapy, personal growth trainings, education, upbringing, resolving protracted conflicts, analyzing the causes of human behavior (in law, for example), improving communication skills, etc. ... That is why it is impossible to say unequivocally what NLP is - evil or good. Everything depends on the person using it and the purposes of use. Therefore, any person, including you, can take the best from NLP in order to make positive changes in your life.
