Image of the leader: what is it?
This word came into our language not so long ago, andLiterally, its meaning comes down to the concept of “image” - an idea of a particular object, phenomenon or person. It is very complex and multifaceted: it is influenced by many factors, and it itself also imperceptibly influences our consciousness. Do you want to communicate with a person or not? Everything seems to be normal in him, but still, somehow, the soul is not drawn to him. As a rule, it is all about image, or - in the reputation of a particular person. It happens that the image is created practically from scratch, that is, the personality is one, and its image in the minds of other people is completely different. However, as a rule, it is a reflection of the aspirations and deep-seated traits of a person, which, by the way, he is not always aware of. For example, a girl constantly expresses herself noisily and loudly, subconsciously wanting to attract attention to herself, but this, on the contrary, repels. In a negative image, a person's shortcomings are amplified, and in a positive one - advantages. We all evaluate each other, and these evaluations affect our relationships. In this regard, the image of a female manager should be impeccable and positive, since more demands are placed on us than on a man (after all, you still have to prove that you work no worse than the strong half of humanity). Although some bosses deliberately create a negative image for themselves, for example, so that they are not pestered with minor requests or to be in the public eye.
What is the image of a successful leader?
Because the personality of the leader playsa decisive role in business, then very often it is precisely by this that the entire company as a whole is assessed. Accordingly, it is important to understand what is included in the image of a modern manager and to be able to work with it. The following important points can be highlighted:
- Individual characteristics: appearance, psycho-physiological characteristics, personality type, character, individual style of activity, etc. ... This is all that is connected with the personality and individuality of man.
- Social characteristics.The most important of them is social status. Of course, it is directly related to the position a person holds, but it is not limited to it - status is also influenced by origin and personal status. Status determines how a person will behave in society and, accordingly, with business partners.
- Values are basic internal attitudes andprinciples that a person relies on when making decisions. They have a very powerful influence on the entire organizational culture of the company. Surely you have encountered cases when a liberal manager has employees who drink tea and wear jeans, while a strict manager has everyone walking the line.
- Personal mission. It sounds somewhat pompous, but it is, in fact, a strategic vision of the company's development manager. It determines where the boss is now and where he wants to be in the future. The goals of the whole company and the head depend on it. It is on his personal mission that the personal mission of the entire organization is based.
The image of a leader can be external andinternal. External image is how the company's top person is perceived by society as a whole and by groups of people whose interests, one way or another, intersect with the interests of the organization. It is directly related to how much people trust the company and want to cooperate with it, because our brain identifies the entire organization with its leader (and it turns out that this is not far from the truth!) Internal image is based on the relationship between the boss and his subordinates or, in other words, how the staff perceives the leader. It may seem that it is not as important as the external one, but this is not so, and it also needs to be given time. In small companies, the image of the leader can be formed on the basis of his direct contacts with subordinates. In larger organizations, this may be difficult, since the leader mainly contacts middle and senior managers. To avoid distortion of information at this stage, the top person of the company should periodically communicate directly with the people: record video messages, publish booklets, come to lunch or to the smoking room. The internal image of the boss often differs from the external one, because not everything becomes known outside the company. It seems to be deeper and more multifaceted, and you can only get in touch with it by looking at everything from the inside. At the same time, the internal image of the head of the organization greatly influences the external one, because employees in any case broadcast their ideas to the environment outside the company. What is included in the successful image of a modern manager?
- Purposefulness and dedication to their work;
- Expressed leadership qualities;
- Willingness to take risks and courage in decision-making;
- Ability to take responsibility;
- Ability to take into account many factors in solving a professional problem;
- Ability to delegate authority and allocate responsibilities;
- Aiming at a positive result;
- High efficiency.
Management Styles
Taking apart the image of the modernmanager, we cannot help but touch upon the issue of management styles. We have already explained the importance of how employees see their boss, and it is his management style that directly influences this perception. Psychologists distinguish three options: authoritarian, democratic and permissive. A manager who adheres to an authoritarian management style, as a rule, gives laconic orders in a businesslike and abrupt tone. He does not give the impression of a friendly person. His boundaries and prohibitions are strict, and he does not make exceptions for anyone. At the same time, he can both praise and scold an employee, but all this turns out to be very subjective. This leader is, as it were, above the team, possessing the decisive right to vote on all issues. All matters are always discussed in advance and planned in full. Usually, he develops only immediate goals, and no one thinks about long-term ones. The democratic style (or collegial) is based on the principle of participatory, or, in simple terms, on the participation of the team in making management decisions. There are no orders as such in the boss's speech - there are proposals said in a comradely tone. This manager gives feedback competently: when he praises or criticizes a subordinate, he always gives recommendations regarding his problem areas. He is ready to discuss his prohibition with employees and subject it to adjustment if necessary. All business issues are discussed together with the team, and everyone is responsible for the implementation of professional tasks. Thus, it is obvious that the position of this manager is within the group. And the last, permissive management style, is based on the manager's being away from the entire team. He does not give any instructions, there is no feedback - rather, he stands aside and watches the course of events. Things in the organization go by themselves and develop thanks to the interests and activity of individual members of the work collective. It is believed that the democratic management style is the most effective, but this is like the average temperature in a hospital. Organizations are different, and for some models an authoritarian leader will be effective (for bureaucratic ones, for example), and for others - permissive (most likely, these are creative groups, such as advertising agencies).
How can a leader form the right image?
Now we come to the main question:What should be the correct formation of the image of the manager? After all, it never develops by itself - it is always built thanks to the long and painstaking work of the manager and his team. So, the formation of the image of the manager is based on the following very important points:
It is very important for the image of a leader how he is presentedhow people around you treat you. And this attitude will be positive if you manage to win them over. The simplest technique is compliments. This is especially true for subordinates (there is even a saying: “If you don’t praise, you won’t go”). They will work much better if you give them positive feedback (for example, by emphasizing what they do well before pointing out their shortcomings). An individual approach also works very well. Agree, it is very pleasant when you are asked about your life - why not use this principle when communicating with people? After all, as Dale Carnegie said: “A person likes to talk about himself most of all.” Then they will think of you as a good and sensitive leader. As you already understood, the image of a successful leader includes many components, each of which plays a very important role. At the same time, everything is in your hands: in the matter of forming the right image, nothing is impossible. If you want to be considered strong and confident, you can achieve this (as well as the opposite effect). The main thing is to understand what you want and go for it. We recommend reading:
