The hallway is the calling card of any home.Today, for some reason, we have begun to pay little attention to the interior design of this part of the apartment or house. However, this fact is explained by the layout of apartment buildings, where most of the population of our country lives. Cramped corridors, where sometimes even no furniture fits, are very difficult to improve in any way. So we can only regularly update the interior of the hallway, changing the wallpaper. Previously, in the times of total shortages, we did not have a problem of choice: we pasted whatever we got. However, today the choice is so wide that it is very difficult to settle on something specific. So we think about what wallpaper to choose for the hallway, for the bedroom, for the kitchen, for the living room. Note that this question arises not only from the abundance of goods, but also from our desire to adhere to the rules of interior design. Well, if there is a question, you need to look for an answer to it. This is what we will do.
Hallway Features
If we talk about functional featuresof this room, it is necessary to note its active use. Not a single person entering or leaving the house bypasses the hallway. In addition, in many apartments and houses the layout is such that the path from one room to another also runs through the hallway. Many pet owners arrange beds for dogs and cats in the hallway, shoe cabinets, clothes hangers, and often landline telephones are located here. The size of the hallway in most apartments also leaves much to be desired, as does the layout of this room. There are many doors in the hallway: the entrance, to the toilet and bathroom, to the kitchen, to the rooms, and very little wall space remains free for gluing wallpaper. And the walls themselves are far from always perfectly straight, but have protruding corners or niches. Therefore, re-gluing wallpaper in the hallway is a troublesome business, and they, as luck would have it, get dirty here faster than in other rooms of the house. So, when choosing wallpaper, you need to consider these features of the hallway first of all. Wallpaper for this room should be resistant to dirt or washable, durable to withstand frequent touching: we not only walk through the hallway, but also get dressed here, touching the walls with our body and clothes. And in this regard, the first criterion for your choice should be the quality of the wallpaper, or rather, the materials from which it is made.
Materials
By and large, all modern wallpapers can be divided into five groups: paper, non-woven, fabric, vinyl and natural.
- Paper wallpapers
These are single-layer wallpapers, which usually have:applied or textured (embossed) pattern. Most often, paper wallpaper is painted and textured at the same time. The texture of the wallpaper makes it more embossed, but no less thin. And paper wallpaper is thin, so it cannot hide the unevenness of the wall and therefore it wears out quickly. Paper wallpaper gets dirty, greasy and worn very quickly. But it has two positive qualities - it is the cheapest and the most environmentally friendly.
- Fluffy wallpaper
Here we are talking about the base on which it is appliedpaper, vinyl or fabric covering. They are more expensive, but so flexible that they can hide unevenness on the walls. The non-woven base is quite durable and moisture-resistant. In addition, the process of gluing such wallpaper to the wall is significantly simplified, since you only have to smear the wall with glue, and then stick dry wallpaper on it. Wallpaper for painting is produced on a non-woven base, which has a larger width, which also simplifies the gluing process. In addition, you can often update the interior of a hallway covered with such wallpaper by simply repainting the walls.
- Fabric wallpaper
Available on paper and non-woven bases.People call them silk-screen printing. Not a very suitable wallpaper option for a hallway, and also expensive. Although fabric wallpaper lasts a long time, is easy to clean, and is not afraid of moisture. They are very resistant to abrasion, light-resistant, and look elegant and rich. But they are more suitable for a bedroom or living room.
- Vinyl wallpapers
They can also be on paper or non-wovenbasis. They are multilayered, and therefore quite durable. The vinyl surface can be considered resistant to dirt and abrasions. Vinyl is moisture-resistant, and therefore such wallpaper can be washed. Quite a budget and suitable wallpaper option for the hallway.
- Natural wallpaper
A wonderful invention.Natural wallpaper has only one drawback – a very high price (compared to all others). Natural wallpaper is multi-layered, textured, durable, practically unaffected by light, easy to clean and wash. Natural wallpaper can hide any unevenness of the walls, it is environmentally friendly, as it is made of natural materials: bamboo, wood, cork and even stone.
Colors
You can use color to adjust the sizepremises. This is no longer news to anyone. However, not everyone succeeds in choosing the right color or pattern of wallpaper for the hallway. Here you need to take into account the advice of professional designers.
Now about color and pattern.Wallpaper in cool shades: blue, light blue, green will make the hallway larger. Warm and saturated colors will reduce the size of the room. These color properties can be used to adjust (visually) the size of the hallway. For example, if your corridor is too long, you can cover the walls near the front door with one type of wallpaper, and the far walls with another. This way you will visually divide the room into two rooms. If you combine wallpaper in the form of panels, the dark lower part and the light upper part will make your hallway lighter and more spacious. If you cover both the walls and the ceiling with one type of wallpaper, you can “lower” ceilings that are too high. The same effect can be achieved if you do not cover the walls all the way to the ceiling and leave a gap between them. Ceilings that are too low will seem higher if you use wallpaper with a pattern of longitudinal stripes to decorate the hallway. Any small pattern on the wallpaper will make the room larger, and a large one will make it smaller. Photo wallpaper can also adjust the size and proportions of the hallway. Panoramic photos in cold colors will help to expand the walls, the opposite effect can be easily achieved if you use warm-toned photo wallpaper. Just do not forget that photo wallpaper is a paper material: thin and fragile. If you really want to use natural wallpaper to decorate your hallway, but you cannot afford it, then take textured wallpaper with imitation stone, decorative plaster, fabric or brick for these purposes. Or buy just one roll of natural wallpaper and make decorative inserts-panels from them. In a word, experiment. You can do this with the color, pattern and texture of the wallpaper, which cannot be said about the materials. If you are not afraid of the prospect of frequent repairs, then cover the hallway with paper wallpaper - cheap and cheerful. If you intend to spend a lot and then not do repairs for a long time, then buy natural wallpaper. And the golden mean for you will be vinyl wallpaper or paintable wallpaper.
