Professor David McCarron and his colleagues collected data on the amount of salt eaten by a variety of people. It turned out that on average we consume from 2,700 to 4,900 milligrams of NaCl per day. Since a variety of cultures and traditions were covered, nutritionists believe that we can conclude from this that the body itself determines the "normal" limits of salt consumption. "The salinity" of the body is maintained at a certain constant level in the same way as body temperature. "The amount of this substance consumed is determined by the brain, and it will not allow a person to overdo it. That is, having eaten a pack of salty chips, for example, after a while you will switch to less salty food without thinking. Yes, we have access to oversalted dishes, but this does not mean that all this NaCl will get into our body, says McCarron. The authors of the study also believe that the FDA recommendations are too strict. The agency suggests limiting ourselves to 2,300 milligrams of salt per day, which is 14.8% less than the lower limit of the range of real consumption.
