The cause of astigmatism

The cornea and lens are smooth and sphericalsurface. Their deformation leads to the fact that the refraction of rays in the eye is disrupted. They are focused not in the center of the retina, but in front of and behind it, resulting in astigmatism. This is a disease in which the child sees everything around him as unclear and blurry.astigmatism reasonUntreated astigmatism is the cause of strabismusPhoto:Getty Deformation of the lens and cornea can be congenital. It occurs due to failures in the development of the fetus at 3-6 weeks of pregnancy or is passed on to the baby by inheritance. Acquired astigmatism can appear for the following reasons:

  • eye injury, due to which the lens or the cornea has suffered;
  • unsuccessful ophthalmologic operation, improperly applied sutures;
  • corneal inflammation;
  • dystrophic diseases that lead to corneal thinning;
  • deformation of the upper jaw and orbits.

Adults are also susceptible to acquired astigmatism.

How to determine that a child has astigmatism

Regardless of the cause of astigmatism, the disordervision is its main symptom. But it does not appear immediately. Only after straining the eyes does visual acuity disappear, small objects become blurry. Therefore, the symptoms are taken for banal fatigue. Only with the development of the disease does vision begin to deteriorate. Congenital disease manifests itself in preschool age, less often in elementary grades. Acquired astigmatism begins to develop immediately after an event that affected the deformation of the lens or iris. Symptoms of astigmatism:

  • headache;
  • eye redness;
  • unpleasant sensation in the superciliary area;
  • blur of the picture;
  • feeling of sand in the eyes.

In addition, the child may confuse letters and squint.and move the lower eyelid with your hand. There are more than 10 types of astigmatism. Depending on this and the degree of neglect of the disease, treatment is prescribed. Milder forms of deformation are corrected by wearing lenses or glasses, complex ones have to be operated. Astigmatism is a disease that is difficult to notice. The child does not always complain of visual impairment, other symptoms are non-specific. But it is extremely dangerous to neglect it, the consequences will either complicate the treatment or lead to irreversible processes. That is why it is important to consult a doctor even with the slightest problems with vision. Also interesting:
