Royal fashion
The world's first cradle on wheels was inventedEnglish landscape architect William Kent at the request of the Duke of Devonshire William Cavendish. He was the father of six children and made sure that all his offspring could breathe fresh air at the same time. Therefore, the vehicle was more like a cart to which a goat was harnessed. By the way, Cavendish's sons, when they grew up, surpassed their father in service. Probably, oxygen had a good effect on mental abilities, it is not for nothing that doctors advise to walk with babies more often. And the real fashion for strollers came from Queen Victoria, who wanted to personally walk her nine heirs in the park. Of course, she did not push such a heavy thing herself, especially since the bulky structure had to be pulled, not pushed. The stroller, which was more like a carriage in size, was entrusted to be pulled by a pony, and the mother and nannies proudly walked nearby. The carriages of aristocratic children resembled carriagesPhoto: Getty ImagesWhen fashion took hold in wide aristocratic circles, dogs and donkeys also carried babies. Another revolution was made by inventor Charles Burton in 1853, when he patented a stroller with a handle that could be used to push it forward. Today, we would immediately name the main disadvantage of such strollers: children could only sit in them, and therefore they were not suitable for very small children. In addition, they were heavy, wooden or wicker, like baskets, on three huge wheels and more reminiscent of carts.
Like a tank
But then strollers started to be made of plastic, rubber and tarpaulin, and they became lighter. The wheels became hinged, which increased maneuverability. By analogy with cars, children's transport had a brake and shock absorber. But the most important thing was a flat bottom, so that the baby could lie down and sleep. In the Soviet Union, they began to produce strollers after the war, copying samples brought from Germany. But the heavy, bulky designs were still inferior to imported ones. High stroller-sitting strollers for older children, on large wheels, also appeared. In 1975, strollers of a new type, which were produced in the Moscow region, even received the Quality Mark and a gold medal at VDNKh. In the mid-1970s, carriages for children were already affordable for most mothers.1/3Antique carriages were more like cartsPhoto: Getty ImagesOdessa, mid-20th centuryPhoto: wikimedia/Vladimir KazakovA century and a half ago, strollers were pulled, not pushed Photo: Getty ImagesToday, looking at these "monsters" that look like tanks, we are horrified. And they weigh at least 20 kilograms - you will strain your back while dragging them up the stairs without an elevator! And they are wide, you can’t put them in a small hallway. And Soviet strollers were not very attractive in appearance. But our grandmothers and mothers were happy with them. And you could even say they were happy, especially if the stroller was passed on "by inheritance" by a friend whose child had already grown up, and it was possible to save on the purchase. Strollers sometimes changed hands several times and carried more than one child! But today's strollers, on the contrary, horrify our mothers and grandmothers: too lightweight, unreliable, narrow - the baby can't move an arm or a leg, you lie curled up, like in a pencil case.
Do no harm
What does science say?Do modern strollers harm the posture of a small person? Can they be used many times? And which one is better to buy - "three in one", "two in one" or a separate one for each case, even though it will cost more? Nikolay Komov, pediatrician, teacher of the Department of Propaedeutics of Children's Diseases with a course in child care:Of course, for a stroller the main thing is that it does notharm to health. Of course, its size is important. According to modern approved standards for baby carriages, the minimum length should be 80 centimeters, width - 35-40 centimeters, this is enough for a newborn up to six months. At this age, it is important that there is enough space in the upper torso, because the child sleeps stretched arms. And, as a rule, these sizes are enough.Modern strollers are lighter and more comfortable Photo:Getty ImagesNow strollers are narrower than they used to be, but they fit in an elevator and a small apartment. Many people prefer universal strollers-transformers, here it is important that the cradle is stable. I prefer "two in one" strollers, the car seat is separate. It all comes down to the budget. And I also recommend to mothers that the bottom of the stroller can rise at a slight angle, 15-30 degrees, then you can walk with the child, even if he has a slight rhinitis, snot does not go down into the respiratory tract, but flows out. And walking is useful even with a slight cold.
What to look for when choosing a baby stroller
1.The bottom should be flat and hard, without depressions, dips, cracks and curvatures that form if the stroller has already been used. Such defects are harmful to the child. 2. The width and length should be sufficient for comfort. It is necessary to take into account individual characteristics, because there are strong children for whom a standard stroller is cramped. 3. Pay attention to the density and hardness of the mattress. It should not be too soft and old. Otherwise, in places where the child's head and bottom are located, dents will form, and this is also not good for the fragile child's spine. 4. The stroller should have a stable cradle and reliable wheels so that it is not rocked or overturned by strong wind or an accidental collision, for example, with a curb.
