Oysters in restaurantsOysters in restaurants Environmentalists andfishermen who discovered that this mollusk was dying for unknown reasons. One version of the oysters' death is a disease, probably a virus carried by some algae. Over the past three months, it has affected most of the underwater oyster farms in France, which is the leader among European countries in the supply of oysters, annually providing up to 130 thousand tons of the delicacy. Experts say that almost the entire population of mollusks has died, and most of the 2009 harvest has been lost. According to preliminary estimates, the damage that the owners of the farms will suffer will amount to 4 million euros. According to environmentalists, the reason for the mysterious death of oysters may also be the warming of the world's oceans. Studies have shown that the average temperature reaches 20°C, which is much higher than normal for this time of year. As a result, today oysters can be found even in Holland and Norway, which was impossible 50 years ago. Scientists are checking all possible versions, trying to establish the exact cause of the oysters' death, but many agree on one thing: by 2010, the delicacy loved by many may become scarce, ITAR-TASS reports.
