It would seem that the law passed in May 2017Prohibiting parents from choosing a name for a child to use numbers, swear words, punctuation marks and positions, had to temper the ardor of the most creative moms and dads. But no. And last year, St. Petersburg parents didn’t stint on unusual names. True, only a few named their children. Yes, and the rumor, they cut not so much as the Falcon and Nikadriya, born in 2015, or Rarog and Kriskentiya, born in 2016.Photo:GettyImages“Boys in 2017 were named Buyan, Neonil and Severiy,” the civil registry committee told Woman’s Day. “And girls were named Viya, Kitana and Vesenia.” And if everything is clear with the same Vesenia - a very romantic name for a child born, most likely, in the spring. And Viya is a fairly popular name in the neighboring Baltics. But the parents of little Kitana definitely spent their youth behind a joystick, playing Mortal Kombat. The action of this series of games unfolds around the life of a character named Kitana - a princess who worked for a long time as one of the personal assassins of the Emperor of the Outer World, Shao Kahn. In their fantasies, the celebrity moms of 2017 were in no way inferior to ordinary St. Petersburg residents. Anna Sedokova named her son Hector, and Polina Gagarina named hers Mia. But my colleague, having given birth to a girl on New Year's Eve, named her daughter simply but tastefully: Maria. Why? A beautiful old name. True, the little girl has every chance of becoming the third, and maybe even the fifth Mashenka in the kindergarten group. And it is hard to imagine how many Marias will go with her to first grade for the first time in seven years. Only Sofias have a better chance of sitting at the same desk with a namesake. It was Sofias who displaced Marias from the first line of the rating of the most popular baby names for girls in St. Petersburg, who had been in the lead for the previous three years (by the way, this name became the most popular not only in Russia, but also in the world). The top five in St. Petersburg are Anastasia, Alisa and Ksenia. But boys in the city on the Neva were more often called Alexanders, Artems, Mikhails, Maxims and Ivans. Compared to 2016, there are no changes.
