The causes of strabismus in children
This disease can be congenital or acquired. In children under one year of age, the cause is most often heredity.Strabismus in children under one year of age is often congenital Photo: Getty The following factors influence the appearance of strabismus:
- birth trauma;
- infection;
- diseases of a woman during pregnancy;
- abnormal development of the eye muscles;
- concomitant eye diseases, for example, hyperopia, nearsightedness or cataract;
- pathology of pregnancy;
- prematurity or weight of the baby is less than 2 kg.
The problem is not necessarily congenital, the childmay be born without visual impairment. Often, the development of the disease is provoked by stress, so protect the baby from worries and nervous shocks. Do not think that strabismus is not scary and postpone treatment until the child grows up. As a result of the disease, visual acuity decreases, the eye muscles do not develop correctly. In children under one year, the consequences are even more serious. Due to the disease, coordination of movements is impaired, the baby is constantly afraid. Such children often lag behind in development. There are several types of strabismus. Convergent form may indicate a brain tumor, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, neuralgia or mental trauma.
How to correct strabismus in children?
The older the child, the harder it is to get rid of the disease. Only an ophthalmologist can diagnose and treat the disease. Recovery takes up to two years. The following methods are used:
- gymnastics for the eyes;
- correction of vision with glasses or lenses;
- deterioration of vision of the healthy eye (it is closed with a bandage) to include the "lazy" in the work;
- local retina with the help of lamps and laser;
- Diploptics (recovery of binocular vision).
The doctor chooses the method based on the type of disease andage of the patient. If none of the methods help, they proceed to surgical intervention. Gymnastics is performed at home. For example, holes are made in a sheet of plastic (at least 10 pieces). The child's task is to pull a string through them. They do this when the baby is awake. They spend up to two hours a day on exercises. Exercises take up to half an hour, several approaches are made. To detect congenital or acquired strabismus in time, undergo a routine examination at one month, six months and one year of the child's life. Continue to be observed until the baby is three years old, even if there are no problems. Also interesting:
