What makes it special is that it has never been exhibited anywhere and was kept in a private collection.Francis Bacon met Freud at the end of World War II. The artists became friends and painted each other's portraits. Interestingly, in 2008, Freud's portrait of Bacon was sold for only $8 million.At the same auction, Salvador Dali's "Portrait of Paul Eluard" was sold for $21.6 million, thus becoming the most expensive work by the surrealists ever sold at auction. "Close-up" is an auction dedicated to the sale of a private collection of 20th century art. It included about 60 paintings and sculptures, including works by Dali, Chagall, Modigliani, Klee, Giacometti, Bacon, Freud. At another auction, no one agreed to give $16 million for the most expensive lot, the painting "Still Life a l'Esperance". But someone may well find the dentures of great politicians useful: Winston Churchill's crown was bought for $25 thousand by an antiques lover who wished to remain anonymous.
