How to choose fruits and vegetablesRules have been cancelledregulating the shape and size of fruits and vegetables, which were introduced quite recently, but have already managed to acquire a reputation for "Euro-madness": the standards stipulated norms for curvature of cucumbers up to millimeters per centimeter of length, the permissible diameter of carrots and the weight of one bunch of grapes. From July 1, the standards were cancelled for 26 categories of fruits and vegetables, including apricots, eggplants, carrots, cucumbers, onions, cabbage. For the 10 most popular categories, which make up about 75% of the volume of fruits and vegetables sold in the EU, the rules will be retained. Among these categories are apples, citrus fruits, peaches, strawberries, tomatoes, grapes. However, supermarkets will be able to sell non-standard vegetables and fruit in these categories, provided that they are labelled on the shelves as "vegetables intended for processing". "There is no point in throwing away perfectly good quality food just because it is the "wrong" shape or size," says the head of the EU's agricultural commission. According to her, lifting the restrictions will give shoppers much more choice, and at the same time the opportunity to save on food. Source: bbc.co.uk
