Restoration of facadesRestoration of facadesPhoto:Official website of the Bolshoi Theatre By City Day, the restoration of three facades of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre building — the main one and two side ones on Petrovka and Shchepkina Streets — will be completed. This will help increase the width of the driveway along Petrovka Street, which should please motorists. As reported earlier, the restorers have done a lot of work at the final stage of the restoration. In addition to simply desalting the white stone columns of the main facade, a lot of historical documentation was studied to return the main lobby to its historical appearance. During the work, the builders found out that the walls have preserved the history of numerous reconstructions and restorations of the building — fragments of the masonry of the old Petrovsky Theatre of 1870 and the Bolshoi Petrovsky Theatre of 1825. It was noted that by the beginning of the 21st century, the historical color scheme of the interior had been completely lost. A great deal of work had been done during the five years of restoration. In the main lobby, the ceiling decor was corrected, the plaster moldings on the walls were restored, the staircase to the parterre corridor was recreated according to historical analogues, and the main staircases in the mezzanine foyer were reinforced. And special hand-pressed Mettlach tiles were ordered for the floors, exactly the same as those made by the Villeroy & Boch factory more than 100 years ago.
