Nature is wise and humane. That is why all animals in the process of reproduction of offspring in the outside help, as a rule, do not need. However, when it comes to our pets, we do not think so. And if a cat or a dog is going to give us his cubs, we in turn are puzzled by how to help it. And even if the births take place without pathology, we strive to take in the process feasible, and sometimes the most active participation. Especially the issue of obstetrics worries dog owners. So let's find out how to take delivery in a dog, and that experienced dog breeders advise on this. Dogs living in a person's house are so "humanized" to them that we feel as if they can not do without help in this very delicate process. In most cases, our dog's help is not required. All that a host has to do is just prepare a place for the dog and act as an independent observer. Nevertheless, for many dogs (especially the first-born), labor is a real stress. It is even more stressful for the owner of the dog. In addition, you need to be prepared for various kinds of surprises. So, how to prepare for this event and how to take delivery in a dog?
Preliminary preparation
First, be sure to arrange with a veterinarianabout his help in case of need. Have your phone number or emergency veterinary phone number with you. But, let's hope that you will not need to call these numbers and everything will go well. Secondly, stock up on a set of necessary medications. Check the first aid kit and replenish its composition, which should include:
- a bubble of liquid zelenki (a green-pencil in this case will not work);
- the smallest (children's) syringing;
- levomecol (ointment);
- scissors;
- acrylic or silk threads;
- medical alcohol or vodka (not for you, but for puppies!);
- soothing (this is already for you).
In addition, you will need clean sheets anddiapers (which can then be discarded), a hot-water bottle (possibly electric) or a pair of plastic bottles, a capacious box (where you can put six or seven newborn puppies). Some dog owners have successfully used a heated blanket instead of a warmer and say that it is much more convenient. If possible, then make a playpen for mom and kids. It should be a low box with sides, in which the dog could lie, stretched out to its full height. In special arenas there is still a small gap between the bottom of the box and the lower part of the sides so that the dog does not press the pups against the walls. If such an arena was not acquired or produced, then simply prepare a place for the dog on the floor, with a blanket (foam mattress), a medical oilcloth and sheets.
Preliminary manipulation
Pregnancy in the dog lasts 58-68 days. And it can grow in earnest at the most inappropriate time for you, for example, at night or when you are at work. Therefore, at the beginning of the proposed birth, take two or three days off time off and be prepared not to miss this crucial moment. Otherwise your dog can easily turn into a "maternity ward" a sofa or a bed, and you earn a psychosis on the basis of feelings for your girl. Before giving birth, the dog begins to behave restlessly. Even before the onset of labor, he begins to search for a place for delivery, and if he has already found, he will dig the litter and pave. This means that soon, soon, everything will begin. As soon as your girl (fishing, zainka, zolotko) will let you know that she is ready to produce God's offspring, prepare everything necessary for his meeting. Get out and place in a convenient place all of the above medicines, soak in a saucer with alcohol, acrylic threads and keep a hot water bottle or bottles, which can be replaced. Wash boiling water with a syringe, wipe the scissors with alcohol, make sure that the veterinarian's phone number is also at hand. It is also advisable to prepare a box for puppies in advance. Cover it with a bikini blanket (or a blanket with heating) and a clean diaper. And most importantly, prepare yourself. Do not panic! There is nothing wrong with the fact that your dog will now start giving birth. This process is natural. So calm down and try to calm the dog. Stroke it, say sweet words. Remember that your excessive anxiety can be transmitted to the dog. And she is not so sweet. Look at how she behaves. Signs of labor: chills (small trembling), frequent breathing, puffing, digging of litter. If all this you already observe, then attempts will begin soon, and after them the birth itself.
Childbirth
Before the appearance of the puppy, attempts begin, a loop(vulva) becomes loose and elongated. You will see how the cramp passes through the body of the dog, and water is poured from the loop. This water can be transparent, and can be yellowish (greenish), turbid and with flakes. At this point, your girl can begin to lick, and can take a comfortable position for herself: lying on her side, hunched up as if to handle a great need or standing on her hind legs, and the front fronts on a table or chair. Do not bother her, but be prepared to accept the first puppy. It is the first puppy that can get stuck, causing panic and mummies and you. But this is not a fact! Perhaps your intervention is not required. Nevertheless, be ready. After leaving the near-water waters, something like a bubble or a pink nose or a foot appears from the loop. The dog at this moment begins to push, pulling the tail back, and the puppy safely slips out. But! Childbirth in small breeds or primitive bitches can be complicated by some surprises. Sometimes these "nonsense", having given birth to the head or trunk, calm down, deciding that everything is over and trying to sit on the ass. Do not let the dog do this. Holding it in the standing or lying position (it is better if the assistant does this) enter the finger that is lubricated with the left-hand lever. Do not be afraid. Do this carefully, pushing your finger along the puppy, until you rest against the jumper (the narrowest place of the vagina). Gently "dive" under this jumper and circle your finger around the puppy. Then everything will go like clockwork: Mommy strains and "spits out" the puppy. Immediately after the puppy should appear a last, like a piece of raw liver (perhaps greenish color). Ideally, without your intervention, everything goes on like this. Mom's teeth burst a fetal bladder, bite off the umbilical cord and begin to lick the puppy, stimulating its breathing. At the same time, she eats the latter. If this is the case, do not interfere, but act as an observer (independent and happy). If the dog does not practice a puppy, then it must be done to you.
Care for a newborn puppy
All these manipulations you have to do only inIf the mother refuses to process the puppy herself. If the dog has licked the puppy, do not touch it until the second one starts to be born. Then take the baby from the mother and put it in a box warmed with a heating pad or a heated blanket. Remember that without a mother it will freeze, so make sure that the box is warm. If the dog shows signs of concern between the birth of puppies, take them away from the mother only at the time of the birth of the next baby.
Tips and Wishes
In fact, everything is not as strange as you can imagineimagine. And if the dog has a healthy maternal instinct, then your help is almost not needed. Although it will not be against your presence at this sacrament. She also needs empathy, moral support and a sense of confidence. Therefore, listen to the advice of experienced dog owners and veterinarians, so as not to harm the mental and physical health of your pet (and his own, too):
- if all the dogs behave normally, then do not fuss and do not bother her;
- Do not panic if more than half an hour has passed since the birth of the puppy, and the next one does not yet exist: this break can last up to several hours;
- with long attempts (protracted labor), do not be afraid to help the girl by repeating the procedure with a finger lubricated with a left-handed needle;
- in no case do not scold her, do not cry and do not cry yourself;
- at any suspicion of a possible pathology of labor, call the veterinarian urgently (perhaps, his counseling will be enough);
- be sure to stock up with the amount of money in advance for payment of veterinary assistance.
But, even after reading a bale of special literature,having consulted with the best specialists and knowing in theory how to take delivery from a dog, be careful, first of all, to herself. She has instincts (which we almost lost) and she will tell you whether she needs help or not. Of course, in the event that there is trust and love between you. And they simply can not be between a dog and a man (at least, on her part). We advise you to read:
